Project Description: The West Fork of the Gallatin River does not meet Montana water quality standards for nitrogen. Water data collected on the Gallatin River suggests that additional nitrogen causes more algal growth in the Gallatin. The West Fork and the Gallatin River both exhibit nuisance algae blooms that threaten the health of trout and aquatic species.
To address these issues, the Task Force is committed to developing and executing projects that reduce nitrogen contribution to ground water and rivers. These priorities are outlined in the Upper Gallatin Nitrogen Assessment and Reduction Plan and include the West Fork Spring Wetland Enhancement Project. Constructed wetlands are natural, innovative solutions that replicate the processes occurring in natural wetlands to remove pollutants.
Project Results:
This project will direct groundwater flow over a 16,570 square foot treatment wetland, removing 80% of the nitrogen in groundwater before it enters the West Fork.
