The events of 2025 Montana Legislative Session are moving fast, which can make staying up to date on bills difficult and time-consuming. That’s why we’ve created a Water Policy Tracker, so you can easily access, monitor, and take action around water-related bills that may affect the Gallatin —directly or indirectly—now and in the future.
The first three columns of the tracker include the bill title, the assigned bill number, and a link to the bill information on leg.mt.gov, the website where you can also find public engagement information and submit comments, testimony, and exhibits around a bill.
Further right, the context surrounding the bill is provided; this includes the committee it was referred to, the sponsor, the sponsor’s district, and the status of the bill in the legislative process.
The status column tells you when and how to take action. If you’d like to receive an email from the Gallatin River Task Force with guidance on how to best take action around certain bills we’re tracking, click below to subscribe for our Action Alerts.
The final two columns contain abstracts describing the aim of the bill and the Gallatin River Task Force’s stance on the bill. These are the most informative columns in the tracker, where our analysis is outlined and our opinion is stated. This aspect takes into consideration the language and intent of the bill and how we expect it could impact the Gallatin River, as well as other waters around the state.
If you have questions about our Water Policy Tracker, or if you would like to connect with someone directly around these issues, please email Milosz Shipman, Big Sky Sustainability Intern at bigskysustainabilityintern@gmail.com.
Our Water Policy Tracker was co-created by Katherine Berry, Water Policy Manager at the Gallatin Watershed Council, and Milosz Shipman, Big Sky Sustainability Intern at the Gallatin River Task Force, Big Sky Sustainability Network Organization, and the Big Sky Community Food Bank.Â
