Voice of the River

Gallatin River Task Force Intern Highlight: Sophie Dellinger

This month, the Task Force is highlighting Sophie Dellinger, our multi-talented and intrepid Events and Fundraising Intern.

A recent graduate of Colorado College with her sights set on law school, Sophie is interested in bridging the gap between science and policy in environmental fields. After studying the growing threat to Western Rivers from drought, runoff, and development as a political science major, she wanted to get her feet wet working with an organization that took an expansive look at watershed protection, where both science and community engagement were valued.

“I think it’s critical that an organization be based in science but also emphasize outreach and education in order to engage the public. I love the Task Force’s multidisciplinary approach.”

Water quality monitoring on the Gallatin River

From the details of nonprofit events and fundraising to the data-generating world of algae sampling and water quality monitoring, Sophie made significant contributions to our work this summer, anchored by strong mentor / mentee relationships with our staff. Especially noting the guidance and support she received from Director of Development, Isabella Vendramin, who “really took me under her wing,” Chief Science Officer and CEO Kristin Gardner, and COO Emily O’Connor, Sophie was grateful for the learning environment our staff nurtured.

“The staff really allowed me to explore my own interests. I was able to learn a lot from both the sphere of development and as well as the scientific work through water quality monitoring in the field.”

For Sophie, the field will continue to be aquatic, as she heads to the Florida Keys this fall to work on coral reef restoration projects.

Gallatin River Task Force staff at 2024 Hooked on the Gallatin fundraiser
Sophie’s favorite moment of the summer? Hooked on the Gallatin, our annual fundraising bash where, thanks to our incredible community, we raised more than $245,000 in support of our cherished river and watershed.

“It was great to see all of the hard work that Isabella and the rest of the team put in pay off. When the crazy rainstorm hit at the end of the night, it was fun to see our whole staff rally together to make sure everything got out of the rain quickly!”

We love a good collaborative effort here at the Task Force, and we’re so grateful to Sophie for her many contributions this summer. Thank you, Sophie!
